Save websites as images — How to take “screenshots” of whole websites
Every now and then you come to a website that you want to keep for further reference the way it is at that moment. Be it a page on Microsoft.com that’s featuring a screenshot where you can read Macintosh HD in a corner or simply a website that looks visually appealing to you.
For the last few months I used Paparazzi! to accomplish this task. Every time I wanted to save a rendered version of the website as a png, I had to drag it’s URL to the dock and to drop it onto Paparazzi!’s icon. Paparazzi! launched and loaded the website — after it was done, I had to [command] + [s] and to choose a path to save the rendered picture.
Yesterday I discovered NetFixer, another program to capture websites. The nice thing about it: It’s delivered with a bookmarklet — browsing the website in Safari I press [command] + [6] and it launches, with the current website’s URL in it’s address bar. But it doesn’t fetch it already — I have to press [Enter] and specify a path before it does anything. And it doesn’t quit automatically after its job is done.
After all, I prefer Paparazzi! over NetFixer — inherently because of the much nicer icon it features. But I’d like it to have a bookmarklet to launch and to quit automatically after the job is done. And it’d be nice if it offers the option to pre-set a path in the preferences and to save the rendered image there without me having to interfere…
Well, that may as well be another problem that can be solved by some Automator-AppleScript magic…
