My Mac is protected by iAlertU

Imagine the following situation: You’re working on some project in a group at school, at work or at whatever place. There are multiple Macs standing around, provided by the institution — in my case, the school — and your own one right in the middle. If you leave your place for one minute, you can be sure someone other took over your place and is browsing youtube as you come back.

After telling them that it’s your Mac and you need it now to get on with the project, they want to clean up what they’ve done — for example close the open Safari window (result: you lose all your open tabs in that window). Or they’ve littered your desktop with downloaded files and you’ve got to clean up the mess yourself before you can move on.

Often it takes a lot of time recovering after someone infested your machine — wouldn’t it be a lot easier if they knew that this laptop is yours or even better if they couldn’t use it at all?

Protected by iAlertU

iAlertU is the first of its kind alarm system for your Apple MacBook computer. Basically iAlertU is a car alarm for your Apple Mac. iAlertU uses the built in sudden motion sensor (SMS) device to detect movement of your Apple MacBook and triggers an audible and visual alarm. The alarm can also be triggered by keyboard and mouse/trackpad movement. The alarm is designed to continue sounding even after the Apple MacBook screen has been closed. iAlertU is activated and deactivated using the infrared remote control included with every Apple MacBook computer. User adjustable settings let you decide which type of alarm triggers you would like to use, the duration of the alarm, and motion sensor sensitivity. iAlertU also features functionality to utilize the built in iSight camera to photograph the would be thief and soon will be able to email the photo to a user specified email address.

My MacBook Pro is now protected by iAlertU (SlappingTurtle) — an easy and simple to use program that prevents problems like the one I described before.

Uhm, you could just lock your session…? Nobody would take away a locked NB to watch youtube Videos…

    Yeah, right ;-)

By pressing [Cmd] + [Shift] + [Q] I can log out — is there an equivalent to lock the session?

I locked my session via the Fast User Switch until now — but (I suppose) since there is only one user on my machine, this little menu right next to the spotlight icon disappears again and again, I got tired to re-activate it everytime.

And of course it’s nice to see the picture of the would-be thief that iAlertU shoots ;-)
