New Project On-Line: Weltkrieg-Ausstellung.com

Two and a half years ago some people from our school gathered around two teachers to do a project in remembrance of WWI. They put a lot of time and effort into this and in the end they arranged a small exhibition at school which lasted for a week.

One year ago I was asked to create something out of the material to conserve it and to make it available to everyone interested. Initially there were thoughts about creating a book. Expensive. Availability of printed information: Slow. Okay, strike that out. No book.

To provide fast and free access to the material for anyone, we went for a website. We quickly decided on the basics of the design and chose to model it on an existing poster. I then created a custom CMS written in Ruby on Rails and incorporated the design using XHTML and CSS.

All in all it took us until late January to edit all the material and to put it into the system. The site went on-line a few weeks ago and we’re proud to welcome the first few visitors even though not a single link points to what we call an “On-Line Exhibition” before this post has been written ;-)

A quick note: Don’t use IE6 to view the site. I did indeed put an extra stylesheet in there to correct IE6′s box model faults, but everything’s a lot nicer if you’re using a browser which is able to display PNGs with Alpha-Transparency correctly…

Great job with the site. I really like that helmets installation; I only wish I could read German.

@johno: Thanks for your comment! Unfortunately an English version does not yet appear on the agenda. Would be great though, I think.
